White Noise: Masking, Not Magic

White noise is the flat reference of the noise colors. Its most reliable benefit is masking, and the sleep evidence is thinner than the internet suggests.


White noise is the one everyone has heard of. It is the static hiss of an untuned radio, the rush of a fan, the setting on the baby monitor and the sleep app. It is also the reference point for every other noise color: pink, brown, green, and the rest are all defined by how far they tilt away from it. So before asking what white noise does for sleep, it is worth being precise about what it is, because the word gets attached to a lot of sounds that are not white at all.

Two questions hide inside the usual pitch. The first is a measurement: is this file actually white noise, flat across the spectrum, or just something bright with a white label? The second is a research question: does white noise really help you sleep? One of these you can settle in thirty seconds. The other the literature answers far more carefully than the marketing does.

What the claim actually is

Noise colors are not moods. They are spectral slopes, and white noise is the flat one: equal energy at every frequency, a slope of roughly 0 decibels per octave across the audible band. That is the whole definition. Pink noise falls off at about 3 decibels per octave, brown at about 6. White holds level, which is why it sounds bright and hissy rather than deep, and why it is the natural zero point that the other colors are measured against.

The popular claim built on top of that definition is simple and confident: put white noise on and you will fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and be shielded from whatever the night throws at you. Some of that is well supported. Some of it is a bigger promise than the evidence has earned.

What the science actually shows

The single most reliable thing white noise does is not exotic. It is masking. A steady, even sound raises the acoustic floor so that sudden noises, a door, a passing car, a partner shifting, do not stand out sharply enough to pull you out of sleep. Masking is the reliable, well-accepted benefit, and it is the mechanism most consistently described in the clinical literature (Capezuti et al., 2022).

On top of that, there is some direct evidence for the sleep-onset claim. A 2017 study found that broadband noise helped healthy adults fall asleep faster in a transient-insomnia model, essentially a noisy environment engineered to disrupt sleep, where the added sound covered the disturbances (Messineo et al., 2017). It is a real result, and it points the same direction as the masking story: the benefit comes from what the sound hides, not from anything it does to the brain directly.

But the honest tiering matters here, because the strongest study on the question is a skeptical one. A 2021 systematic review of 38 studies concluded that the overall evidence for continuous noise as a sleep aid is low quality, with acoustic masking the most consistent benefit across the whole body of work (Riedy et al., 2021). In other words: the effect that survives scrutiny is exactly the unglamorous one. The bigger claims, that white noise reliably deepens sleep or works for everyone, are not what the pooled evidence best supports.

The picture outside of sleep is similar in shape. For attention, white or pink noise showed a small positive effect in youth with attention difficulties (Nigg et al., 2024). Small, specific, and promising, but not a switch that turns focus on. Across sleep and attention alike, the honest summary is the same: modest, mechanism-driven, and most defensible when framed as covering distraction rather than transforming the listener.

What we measured

We do not use recordings. This session is synthesized straight from the definition of white noise, then verified the way an instrument would check it.

The receipt: a measured spectral slope of 0.0 dB per octave, flat across the audible band, generated in Python, with a high-pass filter below 20 Hz to strip out inaudible sub-bass rumble that would otherwise waste headroom without ever reaching your ears. That flat line is the entire claim. White noise is not a texture or a feeling; it is a spectrum, and a spectrum is checkable. We publish the number in every description because it is the one part of the claim that is not a matter of taste.

The honest limits

So what should you not expect? White noise is not a switch that shuts the brain off, and on its own it will not resolve a sleep disorder. Claims that it retunes the nervous system or resets the mind have no scientific basis, and we do not make them. The measured benefit is coverage: it hides the sounds that would otherwise wake you.

The evidence has real edges, and they are worth naming plainly. The 2017 sleep-onset result came from a small, non-clinical sample in a transient-insomnia setup, not from people with a diagnosed sleep disorder, so it should not be read as a treatment for chronic insomnia (Messineo et al., 2017). The 2021 review graded the field as low quality overall, which is a caution, not a green light (Riedy et al., 2021). And a bright, flat hiss is not for everyone; plenty of people find pink or brown noise, with their softer high end, more comfortable to sit under for eight hours. The masking job is what holds up. The rest depends on you, the room, and the night.

Verify it yourself

You do not have to take our word for the spectrum, and you should not take anyone’s. Drop any white noise track into a free spectrum analyser and look at the shape. True white noise sits as a roughly flat line, about 0 decibels per octave, level from the low mids to the highs. A great many files sold as white noise are actually tilted toward pink or brown, which is not wrong, exactly, but it means they sound and mask differently from what the label promises.

The claim and the measurement should agree. When they do, you know what you are listening to. When they do not, you have learned something useful about the track in less time than it took to read this section, and you can decide for yourself whether it does the job you wanted.
