The 174 Hz Study That Does Not Exist

A Harvard 174 Hz study gets cited across frequency marketing. It is not in any research database. Here is what is real about 174 Hz, and what is not.


Type 174 Hz into a search bar and, within a click or two, you will meet a very specific claim: a Harvard study showed that 174 Hz reduces pain. It arrives with the furniture of real research, sometimes a year, occasionally a journal name, often a confident number. There is one problem with it. Nobody can find the study.

That absence is the honest starting point. Two separate questions hide inside the 174 Hz story, and they have very different answers. The first is a citation question: does the evidence people quote actually exist? That one you can settle in a few minutes with a database. The second is harder and more interesting: setting the phantom study aside, what is actually verifiable about 174 Hz at all?

What the claim actually is

174 Hz is the lowest tone of the modern Solfeggio set, a group of frequencies popularized in the late twentieth century and now standard across frequency playlists. Around it has grown a familiar set of promises: that it calms the nervous system, eases tension, and reduces physical pain. The pain claim is the one that travels furthest, because it usually travels with a citation. The most common version attributes it to Harvard.

Search PubMed, Google Scholar, and Semantic Scholar for that study and you will not find it. There is no indexed Harvard trial of 174 Hz for pain. The citation is an internet artifact that has been copied from page to page until it reads like a fact. An overview of the frequency’s claimed effects and the evidence behind them reaches the same conclusion: the popular claims run well ahead of anything published (Biology Insights, 2024). Naming a source does not make the source real.

What the science actually shows

So what is real? Tiered honestly, the picture looks like this.

At the top tier, the strongest and most relevant evidence, there is no peer-reviewed study that tests 174 Hz specifically. Not for pain, not for sleep, not for anything (Biology Insights, 2024). The frequency has a number and a following, but not a trial.

One tier down is the literature that sits nearby and gets borrowed to fill the gap: vibroacoustic therapy. This is the study of low-frequency sound delivered through the body, and a 2022 scoping review of that field describes a working range of roughly 20 to 120 Hz, with 40 Hz the most commonly used frequency. Some of that research associates low-frequency stimulation with pain relief and relaxation. It is real, peer-reviewed work, and it is the closest scientific relative the 174 Hz claim has.

But a relative is not the same person. 174 Hz sits above the core of that vibroacoustic range, and none of those studies used 174 Hz as their variable. Borrowing their conclusions to endorse a specific number they never tested is exactly the move that turns thin evidence into a confident headline. The honest statement is narrow: low-frequency sound in the 20 to 120 Hz band has some support for relaxation; 174 Hz itself does not.

What we measured

That is the whole point of publishing it. The label says one thing. The measurement says what is verifiable. When the two are printed side by side, there is nothing left to take on faith, and no room for a phantom study to fill. The honest limits

So what can a 174 Hz session honestly offer? A steady, comfortable, low-toned sound to sleep or rest under. That is a real and useful thing, and it is also the whole of it.

What it is not is a treatment for pain or any other condition. The one place pain belongs in this discussion is here, in the limits: the vibroacoustic research that touches on pain works at lower frequencies, in clinical setups, and it does not license a claim that listening to a 174 Hz track will relieve anything. If a sound helps you settle and fall asleep more easily, that is worth having on its own terms, without borrowing authority from a study that was never run.

Verify it yourself

You do not have to trust our summary, and you should not trust anyone’s, including the ones with a Harvard citation attached. There are two things you can check yourself, and both are quick.

First, the study. Open PubMed or Google Scholar and search for the Harvard 174 Hz pain study by any wording you like. When it does not turn up, you have verified the central claim of most 174 Hz marketing in about a minute.

Second, the sound. Drop any 174 Hz track, ours or anyone else’s, into a free spectrum analyser and look at where the energy sits. Compare it to the label. The claim and the measurement should agree, and where they do not, you have learned something the description did not tell you, in less time than it took to read this.
