Green Noise Has No Standard Definition
Green noise has no agreed acoustic definition and no direct studies. So we synthesized the most common interpretation and measured it. The most honest color of the set.
The other noise colors come with an equation. White is flat, equal energy at every frequency. Pink falls off at about 3 decibels per octave. Brown drops at roughly 6. Put any of those tracks into a spectrum analyser and you can check the label against the math in about thirty seconds. The slope either lands on the line or it does not.
Green noise is the one color where that check has nothing to check against. There is no committee-blessed spectrum for green, no reference slope to fall on or miss. That is not a knock on it. It is the most honest thing about the whole set, and it changes what a lab can responsibly promise. When there is no standard, the only defensible move is narrow: say exactly which interpretation we built, measure that one, and publish the number. Everything past that is somebody extrapolating, and it is worth naming when they are.
What the claim actually is
Green noise is usually pitched as the “sound of nature,” or as the most balanced and soothing of the colors, weighted toward the middle of the hearing range where a quiet outdoor scene tends to sit. Some apps describe it as white noise with the bass and treble pulled back. Others pin it to a particular mid-band center and build outward from there. Wander through a few sources and you will find the same word attached to noticeably different spectra.
What they share is a shape, not a formula: a hump in the middle frequencies rather than a straight spectral slope. That is the whole definition, and it is loose on purpose, because there is no single standardized acoustic definition of green noise for anyone to be strict about. Unlike pink or brown, green is not tied to a physical process with its own equation. It is a family resemblance.
You will occasionally see it sold harder than that, as the one “natural” frequency your nervous system is built to recognize. That claim has no scientific basis, and we do not make it. Green noise is a mid-band emphasis, not a key that fits a lock in the body.
What the science actually shows
Here is the part worth stating plainly: there are no direct peer-reviewed studies of green noise. None. Because the category has no fixed spectrum, there is nothing specific for a trial to test, and so no trial has tested it. Anyone quoting a health effect of green noise in particular is extrapolating from research done on other sounds, and the honest thing is to say so out loud.
What the literature does support is the mechanism shared by every steady, broadband sound, green included: acoustic masking. A constant, even sound raises the floor so that sudden noises, a door, a notification, a voice down the hall, do not punch through and pull your attention or break light sleep. That masking effect is the common thread, and it belongs to the sound being continuous, not to its color (Capezuti et al., 2022).
Even there, the evidence deserves a careful frame rather than a confident one. A systematic review of continuous noise for sleep pooled 38 studies and concluded that the overall body of evidence is low in quality, with mixed results and real methodological limits (Riedy et al., 2021). So the strongest honest statement is modest: steady noise can mask disruptive sound, many people find that helpful, and the research supporting it is suggestive rather than settled. Green noise inherits exactly that, no more.
What we measured
We do not use recordings. This session is synthesized in Python from the most common interpretation of green noise, a mid-band emphasis, then measured the way an instrument would check any spectrum.
The receipt: a measured spectral peak near 500 Hz, with the half-power band, the range where the energy stays within 3 decibels of that peak, running roughly from 190 Hz up to 1450 Hz. That is the hump the label describes, expressed as a number instead of a vibe. Below and above that band the energy tapers off, which is what gives green its rounded, mid-focused character rather than the bright hiss of white or the deep floor of brown.
We publish that peak and that band in the description because they are the only part of a green noise claim that is not a matter of taste. We cannot tell you our spectrum is the green, because there is no the green. We can tell you precisely what ours is, and let you confirm it.
The honest limits
The candor cuts a few ways at once. Because there is no agreed definition, our green is one reasonable reading of the word, not the canonical one. A different app’s green may center somewhere else entirely and be no less valid, which means “green noise” tells you far less about what you are hearing than “brown noise” does.
Nothing here is a treatment for a condition, and green noise is not a shortcut to sleep or focus. The masking mechanism is real but general, and the pooled evidence for continuous noise as a sleep aid is, by the reviewers’ own assessment, low quality (Riedy et al., 2021). Someone reaching for green noise to quiet a restless night may well be helped by the masking, or may find any steady sound does the same job, or may find it does little. The category’s fuzziness makes it the honest edge case of this series, and the only responsible posture is to measure what we shipped and stay quiet about what no study has shown.
Verify it yourself
You cannot verify green against a reference slope the way you can with brown, and that absence is exactly the lesson. There is no line to check the file against, so the label alone guarantees nothing.
What you can verify is our specific claim. Drop the track into a free spectrum analyser and look for the peak near 500 Hz and the half-power edges around 190 and 1450 Hz. If they are there, the file is what we said it is. While you are in the analyser, try a second green noise track from anywhere else and watch how rarely the two humps sit in the same place. That mismatch is not a defect in one of them. It is the whole point: green has no standard, so the only trustworthy claim is a measured one, and it takes less time to check than this paragraph took to read.
