A Binaural Beat That Moves: Alpha Down to Theta
Most binaural sessions hold one frequency for the whole runtime. This one descends from 10 Hz to 6 Hz across ninety minutes. Here is why, and what the evidence does and does not say.
Nearly every binaural session you can find holds a single number for its entire runtime. Ten hertz for an hour, six hertz for ninety minutes, forty hertz for two hours. The number becomes the product name, and the session is built around keeping it fixed.
There is an obvious objection to that design which is rarely raised: the state you are in when you press play is not the state you are trying to reach. Someone winding down after a demanding day is not in the same place at minute two as at minute eighty, and a fixed target is either too low to meet them at the start or too high to be useful at the end.

What the two bands are
Alpha rhythms, roughly 8 to 12 Hz, are the classic signature of relaxed but awake. They show up strongly when someone closes their eyes and stops working on anything in particular. Theta, roughly 4 to 8 Hz, sits below that and accompanies deep relaxation and the drift toward rest.
Framing a session as alpha-to-theta describes an intended direction of travel: from switched-on-but-still to properly settled. That is a reasonable description of what people actually want at the end of a wired day, and it is more honest than naming a single number and implying the listener should already be at it.
The configuration, stated
The carrier sits at 200 Hz in both ears. The right channel is offset, starting 10 Hz above the left and closing at 6 Hz above it. The binaural layer is held at -22 dB, well under the music.
Measured on the finished master, the session reads a spectral centroid of 404 Hz with an evolutionary deviation of 3.3 percent, a very stable bed, which is deliberate here. The one thing that should be moving in this session is the beat, so everything else was kept still.
The 10 Hz and 6 Hz never exist as sounds. They exist only as the difference between two tones, which is why the effect requires headphones and disappears entirely through speakers. We publish the carrier and the differential rather than only the headline number, because “10 Hz Alpha” on its own tells you nothing about what is actually in the file.
What the evidence supports, and what it does not
This is where most descriptions stop being careful, so here is the state of it.
There is a proof-of-concept study in SLEEP on dynamic binaural beats and sleep quality, which is the closest thing in the literature to what this session does. Proof-of-concept is the right label for it: an early-stage result, not a settled finding, and treating it as more than that would be exactly the move this channel exists to refuse.
Beyond that specific case, the wider picture is mixed. A meta-analysis in Psychological Research found effects of binaural beats on anxiety, cognition and pain perception, with the caveat that outcomes vary considerably by task and by protocol. A systematic review asking whether binaural beats entrain the brain reaches mixed conclusions. And a 2024 meta-narrative review in Frontiers in Neurology reports that the modulation of brainwave frequencies that appears during wakefulness and REM sleep disappears in NREM sleep.
That last point deserves emphasis, because it constrains what a descending session can honestly claim. The descent from alpha toward theta happens while you are awake, which is where the entrainment evidence is least weak. It stops meaning what the marketing implies the moment you actually fall asleep.
So the honest summary: a moving beat is a defensible design given how winding down actually works, the specific evidence for dynamic beats is early, the general evidence for binaural beats is real but mixed, and nobody should tell you a number in a file will carry your brain from one state to another. This session is a calm listening aid built on a plausible idea, measured and disclosed. That is the whole claim.
Why not just fade the music instead
A fair question, and partly the answer is that we do. The bed is arranged to thin out rather than intensify, and the mastering is level and unhurried.
The reason to also move the beat is that it costs nothing and it is testable. A fixed 10 Hz session and a descending one differ in exactly one variable, which is the sort of difference that can eventually be compared rather than argued about. A session named after a number that never changes cannot even ask the question.
